Meet Otis . . .

For nearly 30 years, Otis has stood guard beside a centuries-old oak tree on Daufuskie Island — a life-size wooden cutout with one job: get boaters to slow down and watch the wake near the docks.

He's fooled plenty of folks into thinking he's real (that was always the point). Hurricane Matthew tore through in 2016 and destroyed the dock he was supposed to protect — but Otis never budged. Tough as that old oak he calls home.

These days he's more than a No Wake sign. He's a local legend. Visitors stop to snap his photo. Islanders going through a hard day will sit with him at sunrise or sunset, just for the quiet company. Somewhere along the way, Otis stopped being a decoy and started being a friend.
